Review of Showgirls (1995) by Patrick D — 03 May 2009
Shakespearean, three act structure and all.
No one can deny how well this film is shot. And no you're not looking at arty beauty shots, it's just well put together. Again, you can't deny Verhoeven's direction. Added to this you have a story and presentation of a story that has maybe the most clever disdain for American life and film since Douglas Sirk. It's melodrama at its highest degree, and impeccably constructed.
This is reactions from the 2h 11min version, so I would suggest watching that one. And enjoy it.
