Review of Showgirls (1995) by Stuart K — 22 Sep 2009
Paul Verhoeven reunited with writer Joe Eszterhas after the success of Basic Instinct (1992) with a film that Eszterhas had wanted to do for nearly 2 decades, but was never able to find a backer. After striking box-office gold with Verhoeven, they could do it, and it seemed inevitable that lightening would strike twice again for them, wouldn't it?? Oh, if only they knew of what was to come!! :P It follows hitchhiking jailbait Nomi Malone (Elizabeth Berkley) who winds up in Las Vegas, and ends up becoming a stripper at the seedy Cheetah Club owned by Al Torres (Robert Davi), Nomi has a chance encounter with Cristal Connors (Gina Gershon), the star of the show Goddess at the Stardust Hotel and the hotel's entertainment manager Zack Carey (Kyle MacLachlan).
Impressed by her ability to move, they give her an audition for the chorus line of Goddess. She gets it, but aspirations of fame and fortune get to Nomi's head, souring friendships around her. It's not good drama nor is it a good piece of erotica, but Showgirls has something compelling about it.
It's also unintentionally hilarious, seeing Berkley trying to act and THAT pool sex scene are laugh out loud funny. It was hyped to hell on release, but there is a good film in here somewhere, but it has it's moments that stand out.
:P.
