Review of Showgirls (1995) by Jake Z — 16 Jan 2012

This not a good film by any means, with one of the most horrendous screenplays ever written. It's pure trash, through and through, and despite my better self, I can't help but enjoy it in all it's absurdly lurid glory.

Elizabeth Berkeley indeed gives a truly bizarre performance, but it has to be taken in account what she was working with. There is no way you could make that script good, and Gina Gershon is the only actor that is somehow able to rise above the gutter, but only barely.

But with the acrylic nails, the colorfully ridiculous dance sequences, and the surreal badness of it all, Showgirls is nothing if not one of its own kind. This is guilty pleasure at its finest... or at it's worst.
