Review of Showdown in Little Tokyo (1991) by Chad R — 14 Apr 2009
Classically ridiculous so-bad-it's-good action flick from the early 90's which sees gloriously wooden meathead Dolph Lundgren partner up with spunky Brandon Lee to take on the who's who of oriental villains including Shang Tsung from Mortal Kombat, Master Tatsu from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Random Goon #6 from Big Trouble in Little China (the torturer if you were wondering).
All the tickboxes you are expecting from this kind of movie are ticked off with gusto - over the top action, daft stunts, inconsequential plot and groan-inducing yet lovable one-liners. In fact practically the entire script is one long awesome laugh-a-thon - "Listen you Zen warrior, fucking samurai asshole! I wanna know what's up!" - and how can we forget The Dolph's masterful explanation of shotgun operation: "Take this, point it in the direction things are, pull the trigger and they'll fall down.
" nor the infamous "biggest dick I've ever seen" line or Tia Carrere's excruciating "That time I heard you coming" pillow talk. It's a terrible film but it's the best kind of terrible and at a mere 1 hour 15 minutes it's fast, furious and to the point.
Great fun.
