Review of Show Dogs (2018) by Gretchen M — 24 May 2018
Show Dogs.
Initial Reaction: A Show About Dogs or Dogs that make a show?
Main Characters.
Frank: He's an undercover cop played by Will Arnette.
Max: He's a police dog voiced by Ludacris.
Plot Summary.
When a panda bear cub is taken from it's mother, a task force is sent out to retrieve it.
Well, maybe not a task force than a cop and a dog posing as contestants of a dog show. They have to sniff out the real culprit and fetch the cub (Okay, I'll stop.).
But these two aren't on the same page and they have to learn to work together to save that cub.
SCORING.
Main Characters.
These two are your basic hero combo of loners who have to learn to work with one another. But other than that, there's noting unique about either one of them. SCORE: 4.
Supporting Cast.
There are several talking animals in this movie - including several dogs, a tiger, and three pigeons (don't ask). Some of the things they say can be funny, but sometimes they're just annoying.
And the other human members of the cast aren't that memorable. SCORE: 5.
Plot.
This movie follows the typical three-day dog show - and some behind the scenes criminal stuff going on. But it just doesn't flow very well; they find the criminal more on luck than on skill. SCORE: 4.
Originality.
If you take a typical talking animal movie and combine it with a crime show and a dog show, you'd get this film. There's nothing unique about any of the characters in this film - or how the plot is resolved. SCORE: 4.
Violence Factor.
There's the usual fight scene near the end of the film where the heroes have to take down the criminals. Nothing outstanding or really disturbing is shown on screen. SCORE: 6.
Other Moral Issues.
Some parts of the film can get inappropriate for kids. They occur when the judges have to examine Max's (how should I say it?) private parts. It may be part of the show, but it could've been done off screen. SCORE: 4.
Final Score (out of 60): 27 % Score: 45%.
It will delight kids who love to hear the talking animals. But that's all this film has got going for it.
