Review of Show Boat (1951) by Dano S — 14 May 2009
What an elegant musical with lovely scenery and great characters! I recognized many of the showtunes as I watched this classic musical - did not realize that so many of the songs were from this production.
I did enjoy the Ava Gardner character ("Julie") very much ... what interesting plot twists involving her along the way ... Magnolia was brilliantly played by Kathryn Grayson ... it was nice to see Agnes Mooreheada ("Endora" from the TV series "Bewitched") as her Mom .
.. the only thing that distracted me at times was a few of the "voices" which at times bordered "opera" ... but all in all, definitely worth a viewing if only for nostalgic daydreams .
.. Favorite scene: I loved the scene where Julie realizes that Magnolia is auditioning for a singing job and takes a big drink to calm her nerves.
