Review of Shotgun Stories (2007) by Jason C — 08 Mar 2012
I was hoping for more. Shannon is excellent. Less flamboyantly bonkers than he has been but still with all that seething underneath. David Gordon Green was one of the producers on this and you can see his finger prints all over it.
It deals with the same rural malaise that is indicative of his early work. Director Jeff Nichols attempts to give this the ethereal feel as those films but the screenplay, and some poorly executed editing, work against him.
The film isn't a total failure; the quieter scenes between the brothers work well. Lots of potential, and I look forward to seeing Nichols follow up, Take Shelter, very soon.
