Review of Shortbus (2006) by Brandon V — 04 Feb 2009
Courageous and unashamed, "Shortbus" should be seen by all of us who get tired of Hollywood's dumbed down idea of a sex comedy. You know what I'm talking about - the idea that we can make juvenile jokes about sex, as long as we don't show it. The idea that sexual fluids can be baked into pastries, swallowed by accident, etc., but not used in actual, healthy sexual activity between two consenting people.
"Shortbus" is not afraid to show that yes, sex happens, and yes, it can be funny, but that there's a tender, human element to the equation which can't be ignored or trivialized for the sake of gross-out jokes. The characters are realistic people, the situations are realistic, and the sex isn't just realistic - it's real. All of this is refreshing.
The writing isn't perfect, and the final act drags, but it's nice to see a film that can balance sex and comedy with maturity, insight, and humanity.
