Review of Shortbus (2006) by Dawnxiris S — 21 Apr 2010
Flooded with pretension, often trying too hard to be artistic and ending up coming across as arrogant and unintentionally funny in the wrong moments.
The female lead, Sook-Yin Lee is the only particularly decent actor, but in general it's hard to care about any of the characters.
They argue that the film is not supposed to be 'sexually arousing', but it's pretty obvious that it's trying to stir up a combination of sexual and emotional arousal.
As a drama film, it's mediocre and hollow. As a comedy, it's just a few forced laughs including ridiculous slapstick and the aforementioned unintentionally funny moments. As a pornographic film, it's brilliant in giving some emotional charge and character behind the sex, but the crap going on throughout doesn't make it into something you'd want to masturbate to.
