Review of Shortbus (2006) by Michelle C — 02 Sep 2010
Restored my faith in humanity, at least for about 2 hours. It's a shame that a film like this is considered controversial, as it does nothing but showcase the very best of humanity. A friend of mine told me, "I literally got down on my knees and thanked god for that movie!" And that about sums it up.
I didn't think anything could be more inspired or heart-felt than Hedwig, but Shortbus is truly, every minute, pure heart. It strips away the taboo of sex as something seedy and neurotic and replaces it with the truth that sex is something necessary, and can be something beautiful and a natural part of human connectivity.
Recently we've seen a lot of trendy films about alternative sexualities, but through the eyes of Shortbus we see that there is nothing "alternative" about sexuality. Sexuality is about emotion, it is about connection.
The film encompasses all genders and preferences without being elitist or separatist for a second. Everyone in the film accepts and helps one another, regardless of everything.
