Review of Short Walk to Daylight (1972) by Nolan P — 15 Dec 2010
Early made-for-TV entry in the huge 70's disaster-film genre, pre-dating "The Poseidon Adventure" by almost two months; a moving and gritty account of a small group of subway passengers' struggle to survive after being buried in a New York subway car after an earthquake.
Starring a good cast of mostly television personnel, & featuring tight scripting, intelligent, realistic acting, & involving, authentic characters, the film also addresses a lot of very relevant socio-economic issues of the time in a direct and perceptive fashion.
James Brolin is quite good as a cynical cop, and the unusual casting of Jazz-chanteuse Abbey Lincoln as one of the heartier of the survivors pays off as she delivers a particularly memorable performance.
