Review of Short Term 12 (2013) by Matt C — 21 Sep 2013
I had really high expectations for this and I guess that that's what mildly hindered my enjoyment of it. While it's still moving and awkwardly funny, it isn't nearly as much as it could have been in either territories.
There are some jokes, namely the opening scene, that aren't good and are randomly lowbrow compared to the rest of the film, and some subplots could have and should have been expanded upon. I still welled up at times, though, thanks to the realistic writing and stellar acting.
Brie Larson is terrific in everything that she does. She can do dramatic, hilarious, relatable and weird, like in this, 21 Jump Street, The Spectacular Now, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, respectively.
I just wish that this was more memorable. 8.3/10, very good, one thumb up, above average, etc.
