Review of Short Term 12 (2013) by Kyle Z — 29 Sep 2013
Never could I say that I have seen a film that I can describe as both heartwarming & heartbreaking at the same time. That is until I saw Short Term 12.
The plot & premise of Short Term 12, while not entirely original, was beautifully executed by allowing important plot details to slowly seep into the viewers minds, writer/director Destin Cretton mastered the art of good storytelling.
The main attraction to this masterpiece was an against type performance from Brie Larson, fresh off her comedic turn in last year's 21 Jump Street. Her character Grace deals with a troubled young girl named Jaydenwho is new to the short term facility, whose problems eerily echo the myriad of troubles hidden beneath the depths of Grace herself.
This film had wonderful supporting roles & performances. The two that stand out are Mason, played by The Newsroom's John Gallagher Jr., as Mason, Grace's boyfriend/co-worker with the patience of a saint. The second performance that was noteworthy was that of Keith Stanfield as Marcus, the troubled teenager who is just about to turn 18.
Overall, the two moments that I think sold the movie for me is the scene where Marcus performs his rap for him, and the scene where Jayden shows Grace her octopus story. Both scenes showed you a lot of how the characters feel in a rather unconventional manner.
Overall, this film is already one of my favorites for 2013, and will definitely be placed in my top 10 for the year. Hopefully, the Oscar committee feels the same way that I do come nominations time. Rating: 4/4 Stars.
