Review of Short Term 12 (2013) by Alan W — 13 Nov 2013
A well-structured script (perhaps so well-structured that it can feel a bit too neat and tidy at times) centred by a moving and genuine performance by Larson. Although there are moments of sentimentality, it never got too out of hand.
The subject matter is interesting but you end up worrying over the supervisors more than the kids they are trying to protect. Maybe this is because the kids are mostly defined by their problems - their roles being a bit one dimensional as a result.
This is not the 5 stars movie some reviews will have you believe, but a solid debut and a very decent (and fairly typical) US indie.
