At first I was so doubtful, since Mason told Nate about his poop story, it seemed like trying too hard to set a mood. But then as the story flows, I get sucked into their honest emotions. Maybe the troubles they delivered are quite cliche and I always asking "did troubled kids really full of drama like this in real life?" but I guess the point of this film is about how complicated human feelings are.

You just need to listen and watch.
