It's hard to find the words to properly discuss Short Term 12. Here is a film that touches on such heartfelt and emotionally wrenching ideas, that trying to describe them using just text just seems impossible.
Destin Cretton's beautiful script is sure to hit you hard, and even tear at your heartstrings, but his subtle direction (keep in mind this stands as only his second feature length film) never makes it feel melodramatic.
The film is full of powerhouse performances, not only from the likes of Brie Larson, John Gallagher Jr., and Rami Malek, but also the impressive supporting cast consisting almost entirely of unknown young actors and actresses.
Larson in particular does a marvelous job, playing a young woman who seems strong on the outside, but has problems of her own. It's great that this film has served as a sort of breakthrough for this young actress.
Overall, Short Term 12 is a hugely impactful indie film that in most certainly worth watching. The strong performances paired with an emotionally resonant screenplay and sense of direction makes this one truly something special.
