Review of Short Cuts (1993) by Richard V — 21 Jun 2008
Altman kind of initiated those lengthy films like "Crash" and "Magnolia", which follow the lives of a number of different characters whose lives all connect in some way. "Short Cuts" has some problems, but its strength is a cast of diverse and interesting characters, all with personal problems of one sort or another.
The film is obviously a prime inspiration for Anderson's "Magnolia", and though it doesn't look as pretty, Altman's film is far more genuine. I was a bit unsatisfied with the ending, but the great cast, which includes Julian Moore, Lyle Lovett and Jack Lemmon among many others, make 3 hours pass quickly.
