Review of Shoot 'Em Up (2007) by Compi24 — 01 Mar 2020
An excessive, sparsely entertaining romp through the usual action movie tropes and cliches, offering up an occasional wink and nod to let you know that it's aware of its own silliness. Though, I never thought the style completely suited the idiocy of the events as depicted.
In something like, say, "Hardcore Henry," there's already this heightened element to the presentation that ultimately pairs with the ridiculous narrative. With "Shoot 'Em Up," you're given a mostly plain, drab looking aesthetic, with your slow-mo shots here, your shoddy CGI there, and a bevy of muted performances (aside from the always vibrant Paul Giamatti, of course).
Overall, I wasn't that impressed by it, but I suppose the strikingly slim runtime did cushion the blow a tad.
