Review of Shogun Assassin (1980) by Andrew R — 07 Jan 2009
Wow, I was really impressed with this film, and surprised I hadn't seen it before. Stylized to the point of being psychedelic. The only samurai films I'd seen previously were Kurosawa's, and whereas the main inspiration there was John Ford, Kenji Misumi seems to have been watching a lot of Leone films.
A killer combination. I also rather like the weird '70s dubbing and electronic music appended to the American release.
