Review of Shock Treatment (1981) by Pegah P — 24 Dec 2009
After the events of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" Brad & Janet have married, and seemingly returned to normal lives. But their withering marriage brings them on to a television show called Marriage Maze, where Janet hopes to fix Brad's problems. But unknown to Janet, the show's mysterious new producer has sent Brad off to an asylum, while he tries to mold her into the perfect woman... even at the cost of her sanity.
Hey, this time around the plot sounds pretty interesting, right? Wrong. The fact that the plot is more active in this film only serves to prove that it's about as shallow and empty as the plot to the original, while having absolutely no relation to it. The musical numbers in the original might have become a bit repetitive, but this one is just downright monotonous. Aside from perhaps two songs, the entire soundtrack is just a one-tone bore. The first movie was a sexual statement, attempting to bring people out of their shells about unconventionality. This one takes the opposite road, parodying and mocking conventionality. And while that sounds like good fun, it isn't handled half as well as "Rocky" was and ends up drowning the audience in a sea of stupidity and conformism with the terrible characters and poor acting being the weights tied to our feet. Had they not made this a sequel to "Rocky" and given us new main characters with more story behind them, this could have had a shot. But as it was, it was a complete failure. Overall it's an awful sequel with a shallow plot, cardboard characters, & poor acting. It's even sub-par for a musical. So I must give "Shock Treatment" 2 mad medical scientists out of 10.
