Review of Shock Corridor (1963) by Espen N — 02 Feb 2008
A very involving film, but slightly too melodramatic regarding Constance Tower's character Cathy. She could have been tuned down one or two notches during her outcries, but I wouldn't say Peter Breck's character was overdoing things.
:-) Our main character Johnny was very convincing at being both sane and insane at the same time. I have to salute Samuel Fuller for using that echoing voice-over, certainly got me straight into curious minds.
What a crazy sanatorium, all those colorful inmates cracked me up, the professor was so funny behaving like a 6 year old. I really thought those imaginative sequences worked out, and the disturbing depiction of human behavior as well as the hallway fight scenes, which needs credit as well.
Those fights were more violent and emotional than what is expected from this kind of film, but that being said I still think they suited the whole rough-edged film. This one sure gives 'One's Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest' heavy competition!
