Review of Shoah (1985) by Alec L — 09 Jun 2008
The most powerful documentary I've ever watched. The scale, execution, and presentation of the film is quite remarkable, both for the number of interviews conducted by Claude Lanzmann and for the emotional power of each one.
Hearing the testimony of survivors of the concentration camps, as well as witnesses and ex-Nazis, is horrifying, disturbing, brutally honest, and captivating. At times, Shoah is definitely a hard film to watch, but it's also very moving as a work of art, partially because of its beautiful cinematography.
I was also very impressed with the language abilities and natural ease of the translators, who provide testimony in Polish, Yiddish, and Hebrew.
