Review of Shine a Light (2008) by John L — 20 May 2008
"Shine a Light" is the most exhilarating film I've seen all year, combining the exuberant energy of The Rolling Stones with the thrillingly alive camerawork of Martin Scorsese. This is a exhaustingly entertaining concert film, perhaps the best concert film period since Scorsese's "The Last Waltz" (1978).
Every number is tantalizingly alive, but in between Mick Jagger's frenetic dancing, the audience is treated to the beautiful soul of rock 'n roll. Among the best sequences, Jack White joins the Stones for "Loving Cup," Buddy Guy and Jagger take turns on "Champagne and Reefer," and Keith Richards has a show-stopping solo with "You Got the Silver," a forgotten gem from Let It Bleed.
