Review of Shine a Light (2008) by Jason J — 09 Jun 2008
Okay, so I love the Stones, and I love Scorsese, so for them to come together like this is magic for me.
I did get the impression the film would have a lot of Scorsese and crew discussing how they were going to make the film, but all of that was over in the first five minutes. Basically the film is a concert, a really well filmed concert, but a concert none the less. Throughout the film there are great cutaways to archive footage of interviews with the Stones back in the day, which are great to see.
They do some great songs and put on a good show. They didn't do my favourite of their songs; Gimme Shelter, which appears in 'Goodfellas', 'Casino' and 'The Departed'. But it's still a good experience. Check it out.
Just a nerdy thing I'll do, here are some of the cinematographers which worked on this film, and some of the more awesome films they've shot:
Robert Richardson (The Aviator, Kill Bill, JFK).
Mitchell Amundsen (Transformers).
Stuart Dryburgh (The Piano, Ã?on Flux).
David M. Dunlap (Shaun of the Dead).
Robert Elswit (There Will Be Blood, Good Night and Good Luck).
Ellen Kuras (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, No Direction Home: Bob Dylan).
Andrew Lesnie (Lord of the Rings, King Kong, I Am Legend).
Emmanuel Lubezki (Children of Men, Sleepy Hollow).
Albert Maysles - documentary legend (Gimme Shelter).
John Toll (Braveheart, Legends of the Fall, The Thin Red Line).
