Review of Shine a Light (2008) by Tanya K — 29 Mar 2009
There is one point in the film when, after just wrapping up a song, drummer Charlie Watts looks into the camera and breathing out a sigh of exhaustion, looks every bit if not older than he actually is. For me, that summed up the movie, which is just as tiresome as the band has become.
Don't get me wrong. I love the Stones. Ca. 1971. Hell, I even loved them in 1989 for Steel Wheels, 1994 for Voodoo Lounge, and 1998 for whatever the hell forgettable album they were promoting then. Nostalgia is fun. And let's face it. They haven't really come up with anything groundbreaking since "Undercover of the Night". They are, however, a solid, if predictable, blues band, and if only for their staying power alone (they will celebrate their golden jubilee in 2012!), are remarkable. That is the premise of Scorcese's movie, saying "Look everyone, these old guys can still rock." Well, we already knew that. It's just that they haven't really done anything exceptionally creative for over 25 years.
