Review of Shine a Light (2008) by Tom M — 09 Jan 2011
They look good for guys of their age and mileage, and Mick can still prance, mince, and preen endlessly. But to what end? Most of the songs celebrate youthful posturing; this band of near-septuagenarians plays them capably without ever coming anywhere near investing the songs with meaning.
It's all empty posturing, like a strip club show, and the effect is mostly creepy. The film, like the stage show, is overblown, with way too many swoops and cuts. To distract us from the fact that the show itself is kind of boring, maybe?
