Australian born David Helfgott's struggle with a overbearing and critical father that fails to accept his son's gifts. David is driven to becoming a phenomenal musical genius in his 20's to obscurity within a short timespan.

David retreats from the music world and lives ineffectually until he later rediscovers music through love that gives him a chance to "Shine" once more in his life, he certainly has a reason for being inspired.
