Review of Shin Godzilla (2016) by Delphinus C — 04 Jun 2017
Very interesting to see Anno's style in live action. It's got the non-typical shots and unique editing form that makes his stuff so interesting to watch.
That said, it's clear that it has a limited budget, and so it does feel a bit restrained compared to Evangelion.
+ first stage Godzilla is adorable in the creepiest way possible.
+ more sciencey than actiony, which feels more realistic.
+ I wanted to watch a bit and then go do something else, but somehow I couldn't tear myself away.
+ a few times it looked goofy and contrived, but then it was explained with science and it actually resuspended my disbelief, hard to do.
- visibly lower budget than Hollywood's efforts, but can't really blame them.
- feels a little slow at times.
-+ Godzilla simultaneously looks fake and stiff, but kinda works at being creepy/scary.
