Review of Shin Godzilla (2016) by Juan G — 16 Oct 2016
For what it is (a modern kaiju film) it is amazing . Fans of the genre will love this movie imo.
A bit too much reading for my tastes though . Not just the subtitles for the dialogue either . They are constantly translating the Japanese subtitles in the film . 98% of the time it is completely irrelevant information (i.e. "Hospital building , 3rd floor") . Most the time the Japanese subtitles are being translated while the dialogue is being subbed at the same time resulting in a screen full of text and being left with the choice of which one to read .
The pacing of the film is something else too . It's a welcomed departure from the snail's pace that the legendary Godzilla took but does seem to move at almost break neck speeds at the times .
All in all, I would recommend it but it's not for everyone . That being said , it's probably the most accessible Godzilla film I've seen so far.
