A complete reboot of the Godzilla franchise from Toho. It's a very creative approach to a familiar genre. The initial appearance of Godzilla is not very much like any previous incarnation. 2/3 of the film goes by until you see a more familiar figure.
Even then ... this Godzilla is noticeably different from previous incarnations, while recognizably tied to the guy you know and love. There are some incredible and creative effects in this. The first time Godzilla manifests his atomic breath ability is .
.. breathtaking? The film is also a political satire, depicting the maze of bureaucracy and inaction in the Japanese government in response to Godzilla's appearance. It's one of the funniest Godzilla films I have seen.
It drags in the third act, but rallies for an exciting climax involving a truly novel way to fight the old boy. The film's final shot is pretty amazing.
