Review of Shin Godzilla (2016) by Austin G — 03 Nov 2016
Certified Fresh! "Godzilla is scary no doubt, but the message behind the movie is far, FAR more terrifying. Is it just another giant monster movie? Or is there something far more mortifying and terrible in Shin Godzilla?" In the film, Godzilla is a symbol and manifestation of years of fear, hate and war.
Being created by nuclear waste and evolving at an increased rate, Godzilla was destroying Japan, all the while recreating imagery from WWII firebombing, and nuclear power. Near the end of the film, the world realized that they would have to learn to live with Godzilla, and not just destroy him.
This was Toho's way of saying that we as a world need to learn to live peacefully together with nuclear power, because there is no getting rid of it. It was so much more than just a monster film, it was a film about acceptance and real world fear.
The film is meant to make people feel uncomfortable and open their eyes realizing the real terror and threat that we have at our finger tips, not spectacle and awe.
