Review of Shin Godzilla (2016) by James M — 01 Jan 2017
This is not a Godzilla movie. I don't know who or what this monster is but Godzilla does not shoot lasers from his back and does not breath fire from his tail. Seeing the monster on screen was disappointing.
It was a stiff paper mache looking creature that took all the rubbersuit and puppeteer advancements and threw them out the window in order to show this creature slowly plodding across the landscape, with only its tail making any movement.
However, if they were trying to pace the movie based on the monster's movement they succeeded as the pacing was slow and redundant. Showing people in the same boardrooms making the same decisions over and over again.
The pacing was on par with a bad soap opera. If you want a Godzilla movie that speaks to political issues and the dangers of nuclear weapons I would urge you to go back to the original. If you want fun Japanese Godzilla movies full of action, there is a series in the 90s through 2000s that was great.
The lastest American movie from 2014 was much better than this and more faithful to Godzilla. I personally refuse to call this creature Godzilla. It just succeeds in looking like Godzilla.
