Review of She's the Man (2006) by Ruth L — 26 Oct 2010
Beyond shockingly bad. Uses the old gender-bending gag that has been done far better by Robing Williams in 'Mrs. Doubtfire', Dustin Hoffman in 'Tootsie' and Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis in the legendary 'Some Like it Hot', however this time the twist in the premise is that it's about a female impersonating a male rather than the other way around.
That's fine, but there's only so much that can be made funny about this situation and 'She's the Man' does not explore better possibilities of jokes but rather settles for the most unfunny ones.
Amanda Bynes tries hard in her role but is let down by a less than craptacular script which heads into the direction of Girl Power-'Girls can do what boys do, maybe even better' notion. Women's rights should not be treated so sloppily and stupidly, shown as a bunch of man-hating nonsense.
