Review of She's Out of My League (2010) by Drew P — 17 Sep 2011
Crude humor and plenty of sex jokes. I loved it all. She's Out of My League has a message and some unexpected turns, but I couldn't help but think it could have been more serious.
Kirk is a little nerd with self esteam issues because of his breakup and his belittling family and friends. Then comes around Molly, a perfect "10" who just so happens to dig Kirk. Kirk can't believe he is so lucky to be with a girl like Molly that his paranoia may indanger his relationship. She's Out of My League is pretty funny and gives off a message, but maybe it's unconventional style is a little conventional. i.e. it aims to be different by being predictably crude with a bunch of silly and dirty jokes. It's all fun and games, and pretty hilarious, but I can't help but think if it didn't try so hard to be silly that it could have actually hit a personal spot in the audience, the way Chasing Amy did. That movie was full of naughy jokes but still managed to be touching. She's Out of My League is great for a laugh, especially from T.J. Miller and Krysten Ritter, but aims to hit an emotion that it can't because it's so funny.
A pretty good presentation of a looser's world. But we're taken through a lot of the city. To various parties, the airport, bowling alley, and Kirk's house that looks REALLY white trash. The sets have variety and look that side of realistic. The direction of the scenes are pretty great too, making the awkwardness of friends and family very noticable and well paced. The one shot I do really like is when the friends talk while on the luggage pick up belt. That was a very creative and thoughtful use of enviroment. Cinematography is pretty average, but useful, and the camera angles and shot positions are good for a comedy.
It's funny and worth a look, but She's Out of My League doesn't hit new ground or new thoughts. But for a good laugh it is a good place to go.
