Review of She's Out of My League (2010) by Miguel P — 19 Dec 2010
She's Out of My League is a charming raunchy comedy, that also brings in new comedians to film.
The movie begins with Kirk a young TSA, for people who don't know what that is, it's the guys who search through your stuff at the airport. His girlfriend is breaking up with him and going out with a guy who's living in his own parent's house. He is played by Jay Baruchel if you don't know who he is, its Sandusky from Tropic Thunder is. He has very low self esteem and is absolutely terrified of woman. He is also ashamed that he is only a TSA officer and didn't go to college. One day at work he sees Molly played by Alice Eve, a very attractive girl and he helps her out. She leaves her phone behind and he finds it, he keeps it for her and decides to bring it back to her when she comes back from her trip. He does and Molly gets interested in him and they start going out. He can't believe it, his friends don't believe it, and his family either. With his friends telling him he's a five and she's a ten, his self esteem gets worse.
I liked this rom com a lot and it was different from most ones I have seen this year. I love adult romantic comedies because there not afraid to show things a PG-13 rated film wouldn't. There more brave then most films. Eve and Baruchel have good chemistry together and they were a very charming couple. I was rooting for them for the entire film and the movie took time to flesh these characters out. So I can care for them and not see them as paper cutouts. The supportive cast is great and everybody gives their part. Most of them are mostly up and coming comedians so they really put their effort in making you laugh.
What I like the most about it was that it showed cliché setups and they made it better and made it more interesting. They break up for an entirely different reason then most rom coms obligatory break up scenes. Even the running back to her because you realize you making a mistake is handled differently. The movie was directed by Jim Field Smith and his career has been mostly TV and advertising campaigns. This is his feature film debut and it wasn't bad maybe he could be a director to be looking forward to.
A nice charming not so bad rom com.
MP **** 4/5.
