Review of She's Out of My League (2010) by Drew O — 27 Mar 2011
So, it was a Friday night and I had absolutely nothing to do. I decided to sit down and watch a movie on demand. I settled with this for two reasons. 1) It was free. And 2) It is set in my hometown of Pittsburgh.
My only wish is that the steel city should have been used in a better movie. Now, She's Out of My League had several moments I mildly laughed at, but none that really cracked me up like a good comedy is supposed to do. The story was also rather generic and cliche, nothing very unique to set it apart from the others. That is a problem that plagues about 90% of modern comedy films.
Another thing that bothered me was that the film never really settled on theme. By that I mean that it moves from romantic comedy to dramatic comedy to over-the-top childish comedy. Yes, childish. I'm not saying I don't laugh at immature stuff every now and then, but I really don't find it necessary or amusing to have things like one man shaving another man's testicles. Nothing but a cheap attempt to get laughs from teens that may have snuck into the theater or watched it when their parents weren't home. Sorry, but that's not me.
There were some things that I did enjoy about the film, believe or not. They were things that only fellow Pittsburghers would enjoy. I loved seeing them take a trip to good old Mellon Arena to watch the Pens, the Warhol museum, and of course the airport I live 5 minutes away from. Those little things were enough for me to somewhat enjoy this film. Even then, I still cannot recommend this film unless you seriously have no other options.
