Review of She's Gotta Have It (1986) by Mike M — 19 Oct 2007
Spike Lee's breakthrough film: a still strikingly fresh and sexy comedy... Variable male performances are a weakness, but where later Lee films would be marked by an anger that seemed to owe something to blaxploitation cinema, this debut was distinguished by a quiet appreciation of all things cultural - photography, literature, painting, poetry, dance - that makes the film the Brooklyn equivalent of "Une Femme Est Une Femme", and proposed its director (somewhat misleadingly, it turned out) as the black Godard.
