Review of Sherrybaby (2006) by Abigail O — 13 Feb 2008
Maggie Gyllenhaal plays a very thin and sexy looking ex-con who gets out of prison and is in a halfway house, trying to get clean from drugs and trying to get close to her daughter who looked about five.
The daughter lived with her brother and sister in law. It is moving to see how desperate the mother is to reconnect with her daughter. Every man she meets, she has sex with it seems, except her brother.
Later in the film she meets her father and his new wife, and she is childish in her desire to capture her Dad's attention. Then he puts his hands all over her breasts, and you think "Urgh!" and suddenly the mess that is her life makes sense.
If she was abused, that's why she was on drugs, why she lost her daughter, why her brother is so inexplicably loyal and patient with her. It has the potential to end very sadly, but has quite an optimistic ending.
It's a film about people who everyone has written off, who have to constantly struggle to gain acceptance and respectability. A sad film. I'm not sure if I liked it.
