Review of Sherrybaby (2006) by Terror A — 02 Sep 2007
Maggie Gyllenhaal gives a terrific performance, proving yet again why she is one of today's best actresses, unfortunately the rest of the film itself felt a little weak. The main problem is the screenplay, which fails to explore certain points that the film brings up (the relationship between Sherry and her Dad is a perfect example).
Also it is clichéd and the ending was really unsatisfying. Despite all that there are some good things about it. The supporting cast are equally good (the stand out being Danny Trejo, who delivers a nice change-of-pace performance) and there are some really good scenes (all the scenes where Sherry and her daughter interact with each other are really realistic).
Overall it is a decent, if uninspired, film but you should really see it Gyllenhaal's performance.
