Review of Sherlock Jr. (1924) by Sarah M — 16 Aug 2008
The scene opens with Buster Keaton in a moustache. MOUSTACHE!
This is what Buster Keaton jumping into the film-within-a-film made me think of: "True story: I fell asleep during the production, and when I woke up was so convinced that I was still dreaming, I got up onstage and walked around. The odd thing is the show is such an ugly mess that no one seemed to notice or care.".
I love Buster in a top hat and tails, and I love Buster in a straw boater and shabby suit. I love Buster, no matter how much he verbally abused me in a dream I had once.
This is a good one, but not my favorite. Gag after brilliant gag, but I wasn't crazy about the storyline or the heroine (just because she was rude about Buster's tiny tiny engagement ring). Also, the dream/movie-within-a-movie concept reminded me a little too much of The Dancing Cavalier, like it was cobbled together from a few different movie ideas, rather than being one continuous one.
"Hoist the main sail and scuttle the jib.
We won't come home a fortnight.
For reasons undetermined.".
