Review of Sherlock Jr. (1924) by Andrew F — 15 Aug 2009
One of Buster Keaton's best, although I might be biased since it sort of reminds me of my first job working at a movie theater (nothing this interesting ever happened to me). The gags in this movie are still incredibly funny, but I'm reluctant to call what he does here "comedy.
" It's more like magic, the sort of stuff that, even in our current film culture of always looking behind the curtain, doesn't seem possible through any combination of physical or camera trickery.
It also exists in a kind of forbidden zone between short film and feature length, but it's exactly as long as it needs to be. Poor pacing or bloated running time can be a kiss of death for comedy, where the rule is to always leave them wanting more, but that's certainly not a problem here.
