Review of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) by Jacob B — 25 Sep 2017
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows deserves a higher tomatometer than 59%. Sure, it's not quite as good as the first film but it's a lot better than most of these critics give it credit for. Note that I am defending the movie, not Guy Ritchie's reputation meaning I don't like this movie because I am blinded by the fact that I like Guy Ritchie.
I've only seen three of his movies including this one. The stylish action sequences are amazing with some top-notch slo-mo, it has humourous moments much like its predecessor and Robert Downey Jr.
& Jude Law are still well-matched. Good to see that British Tony Stark still sounds British. It doesn't sound atrocious at all. Jared Harris also serves as a worthy adversary to Holmes, having intellect on a similar level, even messing up with Holmes' strategic "how to incapacitate this particular person" in one scene.
As CinemaSins once said: "The books do not matter". A film should be judged by its own merits. Unless we're talking about the Percy Jackson movies, then I have to launch a full-frontal assault on its lack of faithfulness despite finding enough positive qualities for me to not hate it.
And, in this case, A Game of Shadows' merits are pretty damn good. Two likable heros + awesome action sequence + irresistible style + humourous moments = an action-mystery flick that's a lot better than what its Tomatometer suggests.
