Review of Sherlock Holmes (2009) by Mark N — 16 Jul 2012
Thoroughly enjoyed this film! I did not at all feel like I was watching Robert Downey Jr. playing Tony Stark playing Sherlock Holmes.
RDJ was able to pull off a completely different vibe than what he did with Tony Stark.
The Larger scenes that they showed of London were also very impressive. They captured that feeling of how dirty the time period was due to the lack of widespread electricity and the reliance upon coal.
RDJ's portrayal of Sherlock Holmes was a far cry from the personification of the stuffy old Englishman that we've been shown over the years. Same for Dr. Watson. Jude Law was very much physically different from the traditional portrayal of a tubby old Englishman.
The action scenes where also quite enjoyable. No over the top senseless violence. Holmes' breakdown how how he would deal with an assailant was also interesting. RDJ has had some seriously good physical trainers... The dude looks pretty good considering the kind of life he's had in his past.
Their relationship was a bit Oscar and Felix from "The Odd Couple", but it didn't feel out of place.
I also felt entertained by the "big reveal" at the end of the movie.
I would definitely pay to see a Sherlock Holmes II. While this one was not high art, it was very entertaining and I enjoyed the ride!!
