Review of Sherlock Holmes (2009) by Charles R — 05 Aug 2013
Guy Ritchie's crisper and cooler Sherlock Holmes is a thrill-ride that feels as good as any adaptation of Holmes should - effortlessly dynamic (with action sequences that pack in Snatch-esque fight cinematography) and irreverently daring while not totally bastardizing the beloved property that fans have grown up with.
RDJ and Jude Law make a fantastic Holmes/Watson, and the story amps up the Indiana-Jones-meets-Victorian-England bonanza of the fantastic Young Holmes properties and adds more grown-up yet madcap RDJ-isms and plenty of modern updates (re: technologies) to the books.
5/5 Although the Holmes franchise has apparently faltered in the sequel 'A Game Of Shadows', Ritchie still knocks this hyperactive envisioning of a classic character out of the park. Adventure, romance, rip-roaring action and more, this is a totally unexpected and completely welcome take on the world's first greatest detective (take THAT Batman).
