Review of Sherlock Holmes (2009) by Seth S — 08 Sep 2012
The purest's will hate it. I love the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes, but you must have a different mindset when you watch this movie. Expect a smart action movie, not just a really smart movie.
The story is of Holmes and Watson versus Lord Blackwood. Blackwood wants power, but he was hanged. Soon after his hanging, he reappears. He kills his father, and takes over the the group of magicians that his father ruled over. With the help of magic, Blackwood sets out to conquer England, and eventually the world. Holmes must uncover the mystery, piece by piece, and stop Blackwood.
Robert Downey Jr. plays Holmes like no one else. Like I said, you need a different mindset to like this movie.Comparisons to Tony Stark are pointless, because other than arrogance, they are not similar. Downey is marvelous as Holmes. Jude Law totally remakes Watson. He's not the fat, stupid doctor from before, he is capable in this movie. I like it. Mark Strong plays the menacing villain, Lord Blackwood. He is a favorite of director Guy Ritchie, and he does very well. Rachel McAdams plays Irene Adler. She's OK, and has decent chemistry with RDJ.
Overall this a fresh view of the character. If you like the old view, watch Sherlock on the BBC. But this movie is witty, action-packed, clever, stylish, and very much fun. I for one like this movie.
"Well at least they never miss an opportunity, to miss and opportunity ." 8.5/10.
