Review of Sherlock Holmes (2009) by Arjun I — 08 May 2013
I honestly thought, that after watching The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes made by Granada, their isn't a single movie or tv series under the sun that could match that level. I was proven somewhat wrong.
While this movie is not quite in Granada's League, its managed be in a league of its own. Robert Downey Jr. of whom I became a ardent fan after Iron Man in the previous year, has delivered yet another excellent performance.
He has taken Sherlocks knowledge and misanthropy, mixed it with his own arrogance and cynicism and has given the audiences a Sherlock Holmes they can all love and hate at the same time. Jude Law has also played his part perfectly and it was nice seeing him in this since he was also in the original Granada series, albeit in a minor role.
The movie is a treat to watch on many levels. On the intellectual level, the plot and the pieces of the puzzle are that befitting a Sherlock Holmes story. On the visual Level, the image of London at the turn of the century is a delight to watch and on a emotional level.
...well....there really isnt much scope for emotions in a Sherlock Holmes movie now is there?.....The action sequences are also well shot and choreographed. It was nice to see Sherlock Holmes kicking ass.
..they best way he knows how....scientifically and systematically. Mark Strong as Lord Blackwood gave the kind of Villain that Sherlock needs....complicated, ruthless but above all.....Brilliant. All in all an excellent account of the worlds most famous champion of law and his "on the verge of a nervous breakdown" best friend and colleague.
