Review of Sherlock Holmes (2009) by Will N — 07 Aug 2014
Sherlock Holmes is freakin' awesome!
I figured I might as well get that general statement off of my chest before going on with the review, because that one juvenile sentence perfectly sums up my opinion of the film. Sure, it has its fair share of problems, but the movie does so many things right that you often find yourself forgetting said problems even exist. Robert Downey Jr. brings the legendary detective to life with an electrifying performance, giving the character intelligence, humor, wit, and depth. The same can be said with Jude Law and his role of Dr. Watson, and the chemistry between him and Downey is a thing to behold. The film does a great job of establishing the unique atmosphere of late 18th century London, and really uses that to its advantage when darker, more sinister scenes arise. I will say that the film at times does get more than a little sloppy and unfocused. Not really a big complaint, but it did throw me off on more than one occasion. Overall, if you like a good adventure, as well as a good mystery, I'd highly recommend giving this a go.
