It probably gets an extra star because it's so gay, and as far as the 'queer film' genre goes, it's pretty good. Given the basic premise and characters, I think it could have been a lot more confronting or surprising, or even a bit more complicated.
But overall it's a feel-good movie with a (little) bit of difference and a lot of surfing.
