Review of Shelter (2007) by Joffrey H — 08 Sep 2008
Oh, not yet another gay surfing movie. Actually, it is that fact that makes this nicely acted film refreshing and contemporary. I enjoyed this picture because it felt that I was watching an ordinary movie, not vying for 'Oscars', neither was it super-indie low budget.
This is however yet another a coming-out film! But it is relevant in that it's target demographic is pre/college student. Be warned, you get the token dollop of keepsake angst that seems inevitable with this subject-matter. I hope that gay cinema may one day be able to move beyond coming-out as a core catalyst for plot.
The best thing about this film for me was the great soundtrack and choice of songs.
One of the downsides to this otherwise thoroughly enjoyable film was the Zack's selfish sister came across as unrealistic. As a mother she was ready to give up her child, destroy her brother's future, move away with despicable boyfriend no. million; yet be almost anchored in her homophobia. Erm, something was amiss there.
Another downside and amiss was the trademark butt-shot that makes any gay movie part of the genre. That being said, when Zack finally decided to get it on with Sean I found myself struggling to breathe. Very hot! Still, I would've like to have seen the butt of the "dude" changing his wet-suit at the beach. Hotter still!
