Review of Shelter (2007) by Aves R — 01 Jan 2009
SHELTER is that rare breed of gay-themed movies, a romantic comedy with a happy ending! I have a weak spot for gay-themed movies where boy-meets-boy, boy-gets-boy and they both live happily ever after. The movie treats the subject of gay romance with a light, blandishing touch and it engages me so much that I'm willing to continue my suspension of disbelief long after the movie has ended.
Using two heterosexual actors in gay parts is an effective cinematic and theatrical device, for it is sometimes the case that working against type or against one's own nature makes for a more convincing interpretation. It would seem that the effort and conviction that an actor has to summon in order to do something that does not come naturally, makes the actor more engaging in the part. I certainly felt that was the case with the two male leads.
I highly recommend this movie. I haven't been able to stop replaying the DVD since purchasing it last week.
